退休后,张叔言在与中国当代著名书画大家杨向阳的接触中感受到了书法的巨大魅力。“他的书法造诣和理论高度都让我十分钦佩,独创了融隶书风骨、魏碑气势、篆书神韵于一体的‘三体书’及草篆、行隶等近百种书体。当时我就临摹他的隶、楷、行书,受他的影响很深。”

从此,张叔言开始临摹历代书法名家的字帖,沉浸其中,忘乎所以,甚至不吃不喝8个小时,从晚饭后一直写到凌晨3点都丝毫不疲惫。
